Google removing free APIs

Post by RWAP » Mon Sep 02, 2013 6:59 pm

Unfortunately, Google is now removing the free access to much of their APIs and hence plug-ins which is a real shame.

As a result, I know that Enuuk are looking to move away from Google Maps to another system (Google Maps does still seem to work at the moment).

Google Translate no longer works on the Enuuk platform unfortunately - you do have the option of amending themes\default\offerDetailsHeader.php to incorporate Google Translate API v2, but you will need to sign up to Google APIs and obtain your own API access key and agree to pay for the service. You do this via https://code.google.com/apis/console

They charge $20 per 1miliion characters (pro rata) - which seems fairly reasonable - see https://developers.google.com/translate/

I have implemented this on my own site - using the simple API access, coupled with a browser access key (so someone cannot use my key on their own site)

I have looked for alternatives, but Microsoft's own translate API is also chargeable (although this is free for up to 2m characters per month - but oddly, you have to sign up or buy a package so you have to estimate how many characters per month you will be translating!)
see https://datamarket.azure.com/dataset/bi ... translator

Maybe the answer is to combine the two services ... I shall have to investigate this - maybe use the free Microsoft Translator by default, but then if you get an error code (presumably it will return something to say you have reached the 2m character limit) - then switch to the Google Translate API

Any other suggestions?

I have implemented this on my www.sellmyretro.com

I have signed up for both Microsoft Translator and Google Translate.

The code then uses Microsoft Translator by default - but if it gets an error return (ie I have probably reached the 2m character per month limit), then it switches to Google Translate.

If anyone wants the required changes then let me know.
